Support Services
Educational Services
Coping with cancer is a challenge. Your experiences and emotions will be far easier to master if you are educated on issues regarding cancer treatment and survival.
Most people go through a variety of emotions at cancer diagnosis, and the primary concern is survival. As treatments begin, however, other issues become important, such as side effects, nutrition and diet, and relationships with others.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada (CCCN) personnel have extensive knowledge of cancer-related challenges and resources. We can help you assess your requirements and connect you with educational services and programs that will help you.
Chemotherapy Classes
If you are starting chemotherapy for the
first time, CCCN offers a chemotherapy class every day at our main
site at 3730 South Eastern Avenue, at Eastern and Twain, and at
least once a week at our other locations.
All new patients — we encourage family members to come, too
— are required to attend this class before their first chemotherapy
treatment. The class lasts about an hour, depending on the number
of questions our patients and their families have. Everyone takes
home a folder, which contains useful information about experiencing
and managing chemotherapy treatment.
During the class, patients learn about their
upcoming chemotherapy treatment. They view a video, “Understanding
Chemotherapy;” discuss side-effects and conditions to report
to physicians; review terminology; and hear about the many support
services available at CCCN: our support groups, social worker, nutritional
support, medical massage, pet therapy, therapeutic facials, our
patient library, and support services offered through the American
Cancer Society.
Before your treatment begins, chemotherapy training classes are coordinated with you personally by appointment.
American Cancer Society Quality of Life
Center At Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada
You can also receive educational materials, American Cancer Society program information, wigs and other needed supplies, through CCCN and the American Cancer Society’s Partners in Cancer Control – Affiliate Program. This partnership enhances CCCN’s cancer control efforts, through its access to American Cancer Society’s materials, trained staff and volunteers, information resources, and cancer control and quality of life programs.
An American Cancer Society staff member or volunteer is present two, ½ days weekly at our main CCCN site at 3730 South Eastern Avenue, at Eastern and Twain, to serve you. For more information on this program, please contact Paula Sennes, LCSW, at 702.952.3400.
We also provide a range of written materials to help you learn about most types of cancers and their treatments. These materials include information about various chemotherapy drugs and other therapies and their side effects and management. Your oncology nurse will review this information with you. |
