Cancer is a group of
diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal
cells. Here is a list of cancer facts and figures:
An estimated 4,300 Nevadans are expected to
die of cancer this year, and 4,000 died as a result of the disease
in 2003.
An estimate 10,300 new cases of cancer are
expected to be diagnosed in Nevada this year.
In Clark County, the following cancers have
the highest incidence:
Prostate: 16.4 percent
Lung: 12.6 percent
Breast: 14.1 percent
Colorectal: 11.2 percent
As of 2003, Nevada ranks 15th highest overall
in cancer mortality among th 50 states and Washington, D.C.
In 2003, there were an estimated 1,500 new
cases of lung cancer in Nevada and 1,300 deaths.
Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer
among men in Nevada, with an estimated 1,600 new cases diagnosed
and 200 deaths in 2003.
Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer
among women in Nevada, with an estimated 1,400 new cases diagnosed
and 300 deaths in 2003.
In 2003, there were an estimated 1,300 new
cases of colorectal cancer in Nevada with 500 deaths.
In the U.S., one of every four deaths is caused
by cancer.
There are more than 9.6 million cancer survivors
in America.
The average five-year cancer survival rate
is more than 62 percent.
Cancer is becoming a chronic, manageable disease,
like diabetes.
Despite significant advances in the treatment
of cancer, it is still the second-leading cause of death in the
country, exceeded only by heart disease.
The American Cancer Society estimates that
nearly 1.3 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year
in the United States.
It is estimated that about 560,000 Americans
died of cancer in 2003, more than 1,500 people a week.
In the United States, one in every two men
has a lifetime risk of developing cancer. For a woman, the risk
is about one in three.
